REUTERS/Daniel Becerril/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Samuel Garcia, one of the two main opposition hopefuls competing in Mexico's 2024 presidential election, has withdrawn from the contest to return to his post as governor of the northern state of Nuevo Leon, his party said on Saturday. "I have decided to not participate in the electoral race for President of the Republic," the 35-year-old Garcia said in a statement from the Nuevo Leon government made public by his center-left Citizens' Movement (MC) party. Garcia then became embroiled in a dispute about who would replace him in Nuevo Leon, where his political opponents control the state legislature, which votes in the interim governor. Recent opinion polls have given Garcia around 10% support in the presidential race, putting him behind Xochitl Galvez, candidate of the main opposition alliance.

A prior survey by the firm published early last month had given former Mexico City Mayor Sheinbaum 55% support, and Galvez, a businesswoman-turned-politician, 20%. The latest Parametria poll gave a third contender, Samuel Garcia of the opposition center-left Citizens' Movement (MC), 10% backing. "That said, it's a big lead and we're looking at a scenario where she would have an absolute majority (in Congress)," Abundis told Reuters. MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The race to become Mexico's next president has closed slightly, but former Mexico City mayor and ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum still has double the support of her main opposition rival, an opinion poll showed on Monday. Samuel Garcia, who is competing for the candidacy of another center-left party, Citizens Movement (MC), polled 8% support. A poll published in early October had given Sheinbaum 50% support versus 20% for Galvez, although that survey included a fourth, right-wing candidate who did not feature this time. "With the entry of Samuel Garcia as sole MC contender, the presidential ballot has been practically set in stone," Buendia & Marquez head Jorge Buendia wrote in El Universal. Separately, an analysis of several polls by research firm Consulta Mitofsky which stripped out undecided voters and those not backing any candidate showed Sheinbaum with 62.7% of effective support.

A view shows the urban area of the municipality of Santa Catarina near the land where Tesla has indicated it could build a new gigafactory, in Santa Catarina, on the outskirts of Monterrey, Mexico February 28, 2023. Tesla announced the planned factory in the northern Mexican state in March, without providing a timeline for construction. After a fraught process for Tesla to confirm its Mexico plans, investors are closely watching the automaker's next steps in the country. Santa Catarina's Mayor, Jesus Nava, said local officials were beginning to improve infrastructure in the area where Tesla is set to build the factory. Musk on Wednesday said the company was "laying the groundwork to begin construction" in Mexico but did not yet have more definite plans.

REUTERS/Matthew Childs/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Two Chinese suppliers for Tesla will invest nearly a billion dollars in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon where the automaker is planning a new factory, Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia said during a trip to Shanghai on Wednesday. The planned investments include $700 million from Ningbo Tuopu Group (601689.SS) and $260 million from Hesai Technology , a Nuevo Leon representative said. Ningbo Tuopu Group develops shock absorption products and other auto parts, while Hesai Technology makes lidar light sensors for applications like autonomous vehicles and robots. Ningbo is expected to create some 10,000 jobs, and Hesai, up to 4,000, Nuevo Leon officials said. Tesla has not yet begun construction in Nuevo Leon, and its timeline for starting production is unclear.

REUTERS/Daniel Becerril/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Final permits for Tesla to build an electric-vehicle (EV) factory in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon could be ready in weeks and the local government is beginning infrastructure work requested by the company, a senior official said on Thursday. Tesla (TSLA.O) in March announced plans to open a major plant in Nuevo Leon, its first in Mexico, which has also attracted EV investments from other automakers seeking to meet ambitious production targets. "We are very appreciative of their efforts to enable the permits and sustainable infrastructure necessary," he said. The so-called "Gigafactory" is set to bring in an estimated $15 billion over the next two years through Tesla and its suppliers, Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia said last month. The state has called for more investment in health, education, roads and basic services to accommodate the expected growth.

REUTERS/Angelika Warmuth/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Sept 11 (Reuters) - A state governor in Mexico said on Monday that Tesla (TSLA.O) and its suppliers would invest $15 billion over the next two years in a factory that is still under construction, an amount that is triple what Mexican officials previously announced. In March, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said his company would open a gigafactory in northern Nuevo Leon state, part of the electric carmaker's push to expand its global footprint. At the time, Musk did not detail Tesla's investment, but Mexican officials said the factory would involve a $5 billion investment. Speaking at an event, Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia said the facility will now involve thrice that amount. Neither Tesla's press office nor Nuevo Leon officials responded after hours to a request for comment on the governor's comments.

Mexican state seeks to punish Pemex for emissions from refinery

MEXICO CITY, March 19 (Reuters) - Mexico's northern state Nuevo Leon on Sunday warned that it would seek penalties for state oil company Pemex after a dramatic increase in visible emissions from its Cadereyta refinery earlier in the day. Pemex (PEMX.UL) said in a statement that it had "safely halted" operations in one of the plants at the Cadereyta refinery in the afternoon; the company added there was no risk to the population and the emissions were under control. Nuevo Leon's environment ministry, however, said in a statement that it had repeatedly detected "intensified" emissions from the refinery, particularly at night, and that the refinery was responsible for 90% of sulfur dioxide emissions in the metropolitan area of Monterrey city, the state's capital. The ministry said that state environmental law gave it the right, if necessary, to halt operations at the refinery. Companies Tesla Inc FollowMEXICO CITY, March 6 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) could begin producing its first cars in Mexico next year, with the electric vehicle maker close to receiving its final permits allowing factory construction to begin in Nuevo Leon near the U.S.-Mexico border, the state's governor said on Monday. Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk announced the investment last week, saying the Austin, Texas-based company had selected Mexico for its next "gigafactory" with plans to produce a "next gen vehicle." Mexican officials have said the factory will be the world's biggest to produce electric vehicles, with investment worth $5 billion. "The president, by authorizing and backing Tesla, sent a message to the world that they should come to Mexico." MEXICO CITY, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Electric carmaker Tesla (TSLA.O) could announce the construction of a "Gigafactory" in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon as soon as Friday, local newspaper Reforma reported Monday. The initial investment is projected at between $800 million and $1 billion, sources told the newspaper. A source told Reuters then that Musk had met with Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia and U.S. The Mexican Gigafactory, planned on the outskirts of the city Monterrey, would start by building components for current Tesla models, a source told Reforma, later possibly building a new model at a lower cost than other factories. Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said earlier this month that Musk had toured three states in Mexico scouting locations for the factory.
The total investment, taking into account future expansions, could eventually reach $10 billion, sources told the newspaper. The announcement would follow Chief Executive Elon Musk's visit to the state, which borders Texas, in October. A source told Reuters then that Musk had met with Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia and U.S. A federal official told Reuters Tesla would announce news of its planned investment when it was ready to do so, but that it would not necessarily be before Christmas. Dec 16 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) is finalizing plans to build an electric vehicle assembly plant in an industrial area of northeastern Mexico and may announce the factory as early as next week, Bloomberg News reported late Friday. The plant will be located in Santa Catarina in Monterrey city, the capital of Nuevo Leon state in Mexico, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. It is unclear what models Tesla would produce in the Mexican factory or when it would begin production, Bloomberg said. Two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters in October that Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk was considering investing in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, which borders Texas. Musk held a meeting in the state with Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia along with other local officials, and Ken Salazar, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, one of the sources said.
